Today, I’m answering that request by bringing you 12 gems from Latin America that are absolutely worth watching.

1. Roma (Mexico) – Drama / Art

Mexico City, 1971. Cleo, an indigenous domestic worker, cares for a middle-class family while her own world falls apart. It’s black and white. It’s slow. It’s poetic. And in the end, it breaks your heart without you realizing it. Dialect: Central Mexican (neutral, clear).

2. El secreto de sus ojos (Argentina) – Suspense / Legal drama

A retired man decides to write a novel about an unsolved case that obsessed him his entire life: a murder that justice never closed. Won an Oscar. Dialect: Rioplatense (lots of “voseo” and “che”!).

3. Monos (Colombia) – War thriller / Survival

Eight armed teenagers guard a hostage and a cow on top of a mountain. Then everything goes wrong. It’s Lord of the Flies but with jungle, drugs, and paramilitaries. Visually brutal. Dialect: Colombian (varied, youth slang).

4. I’m No Longer Here (Ya no estoy aquí) (Mexico) – Urban drama

Ulises is the leader of a Kolombias gang (a youth subculture in Monterrey). When a drug lord hunts him down, he flees to New York and discovers that being Mexican there means something completely different. Dialect: Northern Mexican (heavy slang, B2+).

5. Heroic Losers (La odisea de los giles) (Argentina) – Comedy drama

A group of neighbors in a rural town discover that their life savings (kept inside a water tank) have been stolen by a corrupt businessman. They decide to get it back… clumsily, adorably, and very Argentine. Dialect: Rural Rioplatense (great for understanding humor).

6. La fiesta del Chivo (Dominican Republic/Spain) – Political drama / Historical thriller

Based on Mario Vargas Llosa’s masterpiece. A lawyer returns to the Dominican Republic after decades in exile, just as the brutal 30-year dictatorship of Rafael Leónidas Trujillo (”El Chivo”) begins to crumble. Through flashbacks, we witness the conspiracy to assassinate him and the moral rot of power. Slow-burning, heavy, and full of sharp political dialogue. Dialect: Dominican and neutral Latin American Spanish.

7. The Projectionist (El proyeccionista) (Dominican Republic) – Intimate drama

A man working in a crumbling cinema is trapped between his memories and his routine. When the owner announces the closure, he decides to project his own movie: his life. Slow, beautiful, perfect for hearing the Dominican accent without rush.

8. The Death of Jaime Roldós (Ecuador / Documentary) Political mystery

A two-part documentary about the Ecuadorian president who died in a plane “accident” in 1981. Real interviews, archive footage, and political suspense that feels like Spotlight but in the Andes. Dialect: Ecuadorian

9. La casa de las flores (Mexico) – Black comedy / Dramedy

A wealthy family that owns a perfect flower shop… until the patriarch’s secret lover commits suicide inside the business. Secrets, funerals, and a gossipy neighbor ensue. Dialect: Urban Mexican (playful, exaggerated, very clear).

10. El reemplazante (Chile) – Social drama / Education

A former financial executive loses everything and ends up teaching math in a troubled public high school in a poor neighborhood of Santiago. Real students, real problems, and no easy answers. Heartbreaking and hopeful. Dialect: Chilean

11. Sres. Papis (Peru) – Comedy / Family

Four very different fathers navigate parenting, friendship, and midlife crises in modern Lima. Think Fatherhood meets Friends but with Peruvian humor, ceviche, and traffic jokes. Dialect: Peruvian

12. Días de gallos (Argentina) – Music drama / Youth

A young freestyle rapper from a poor neighborhood on the outskirts of Buenos Aires dreams of competing in the big leagues of hip-hop. Dialect: Rioplatense

Hosted by Ana and David, it focuses on natural Mexican Spanish through real conversations about culture, language, travel, food, and everyday life.

9. Charlas Hispanas

Designed for intermediate students who want to improve their listening while exploring Latin American culture, vocabulary, grammar, and real-world topics.

10. Radio ambulante

One of the highest-quality podcasts in Spanish. It tells powerful real-life stories from across Latin America using immersive, documentary-style audio.

How to actually improve using podcasts (not just listen)

Listening is easy.

Improving is a strategy.

Here’s what works:

1. Choose your level (this is everything)
If you understand nothing, it’s too hard.
If you understand everything, it’s too easy.

Aim for ~70–80% comprehension.

2. Repeat more than you think you need
Re-listening is where the magic happens.

The second time:

• You notice patterns

• You catch missed words

• You feel progress

3. Try “shadowing”
Repeat what you hear out loud.

This is how you go from:

“I understand Spanish”

to:

“I can actually speak it”

4. Use transcripts (when available)
They help you:

• Confirm what you heard

• Learn spelling

• Build vocabulary faster

Common problems (and how to fix them)

“It’s too fast”
→ Slow it down or switch podcasts

“Too many new words”
→ Ignore most of them. Focus on the frequent ones.

“I get tired quickly”
→ Good. That means you’re learning. Just keep sessions short.

Where podcasts fit in your routine

Think of podcasts as your daily exposure tool.

Combine them with:

• Speaking practice

• Basic grammar

• Some reading

But if you do nothing else…

Podcasts alone can already take you very far.

Final thought

You don’t need more motivation.

You need more Spanish in your life.

Podcasts are the easiest way to make that happen without changing your schedule.

Start with one.
Stay consistent.

And one day, you’ll realize:

You’re not translating anymore.

Most of my audience consumes content on YouTube every single day. Hours of it. So why not use that time to learn Spanish?

In this list, I've included YouTube channels for learning Spanish and YouTube channels for watching content in Spanish, because, sometimes, the best way to learn a language isn’t just watching videos about learning languages. It’s finding content that you genuinely enjoy in that language.

Let me give you an example. When I wanted to catch up with the news, I started listening to news in French. That way, I didn’t only achieve my goal of staying informed… I also improved my French. Same time. Double result. As we say in Spanish: “Matamos dos pájaros de un tiro.” (We’re killing two birds with one stone.)🐦🐦

And there's an added benefit to all of this: the more Spanish content you watch, the more your personal algorithm feeds you Spanish content. You’re not just learning… you’re training YouTube to become your immersion machine.

The creator makes videos about where words come from, why we say certain things, and weird linguistic mysteries. It’s funny, smart, and made for native speakers – which means it’s perfect for advanced and intermediate learners who love language itself.

This channel teaches you real Spanish recipes – from the legendary tortilla de patatas to regional gems like puches (sweet migas from Castilla-La Mancha). But it’s not just recipes. The other day, one of my students messaged me:
“I want to watch more Spanish content, but I don’t know where to start. Help!”

She specifically asked for content from Spain, so that’s exactly what I put together. No Mexico, no Argentina, no Colombia (as amazing as their cinema is). Just Spanish Spanish. The kind you hear in Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao, and Seville.

So I sat down, thought about what actually works for learners (not just what’s popular), and built a solid list of Spanish movies and series. Some are on Netflix. Some are completely free on RTVE (I'll explain what it is very soon). A few might not be available in your country – but hey, that’s what VPNs are for. 😉

The followings recommendations are perfect for intermediate to advanced learners (B1–C2). Depending on your level, you can watch them with Spanish subtitles (great for listening + reading at the same time) or subtitles in your native language (more comfortable for early B1 or any level actually).

Let’s get into it.

🎬 Spanish Movies on Netflix (All from Spain)

1. Akelarre – Historical drama / Horror

Basque Country, 1609 – A group of young women are accused of witchcraft by a ruthless inquisitor. But as night falls and rituals begin, the line between reality and superstition blurs.

2. El páramo – Suspense / Fantasy

A small military unit stationed at a remote, foggy outpost starts experiencing strange phenomena. Time seems to loop. Faces appear where they shouldn’t. Is it madness? A threat? Or something else entirely? Great for fans of Annihilation.

3. Orígenes secretos – Thriller / Police

A cop who hates comic books is forced to investigate a series of murders that perfectly mimic famous Batman villain killings. Nerdy, dark, and unexpectedly clever. The dialogue is crisp and very urban-Spanish.

4. Durante la tormenta (Mirage) – Sci-fi / Time travel

A woman saves a boy’s life in the past – and wakes up in a completely different present where her daughter no longer exists. She has 72 hours to fix reality. From the director of The Invisible Guest. Twisty, emotional, and brilliantly paced.

5. Verónica – Horror

Inspired by a true, unsolved case from 1990s Madrid. A teenage girl plays with a Ouija board during a solar eclipse and accidentally invites something into her home. Her younger siblings start seeing it too. Genuinely terrifying – and a huge hit on Spanish Netflix.

6. Voces (Don’t Listen) – Supernatural horror

A father and his son move into a renovated old house. The son starts talking to “friends” who aren’t there. Soon, audio recordings reveal voices that shouldn’t exist. If you like The Conjuring but want Spanish dialogue, this is for you.

7. El autor – Dark comedy

A frustrated office worker dreams of becoming a great writer. Since he has no talent, he decides to engineer real-life drama among his neighbors and then write about it. Manipulative, hilarious, and deeply uncomfortable. Excellent for B2+ vocabulary.

📺 Free Spanish Series & Movies on RTVE Play (Yes, FREE)

RTVE is Spain’s public broadcaster, and their streaming platform RTVE Play is a goldmine for learners. Some content may be geoblocked outside Spain, but a simple VPN solves that.

🎭 Series (Highly recommended)

ANA. all in – Legal thriller

Maribel Verdú (a Spanish legend) plays a high-stakes lawyer who gets entangled in a corrupt case that hits too close to home. Courtroom drama meets personal revenge. Sharp, fast dialogue – perfect for B2+.

Esto no es Suecia – Dramedy

A young couple moves to a seemingly perfect Swedish town, only to discover that their Spanish neighbors are… complicated. The show mixes Spanish, Catalan, and English naturally. Very original, very funny, very real.

Si fueras tú – Interactive mystery

A teenage girl disappears. Her best friend uses her phone, social media, and messages to investigate – and you choose what she does next. Like Bandersnatch but for Spanish learners.

El Ministerio del Tiempo – Fantasy / History

A secret government agency recruits people from different centuries to travel through time and protect Spain’s past. Imagine Doctor Who but with Spanish history, sarcasm, and a lot of heart. A cult classic. Students rave about this one.

Cuéntame cómo pasó – Generational drama

Spain’s answer to The Wonder Years. A working-class family in Madrid from the 1960s through the 1980s. You learn Spanish history, slang from different decades, and everyday family conversations. Slow but incredibly rewarding.

🎥 Movies on RTVE Play

No matarás – Psychological thriller

A man’s quiet life explodes when he gets dragged into a violent road rage incident that won’t end. Claustrophobic, tense, and brilliantly acted. Short runtime – great for a single evening.

Ane – Emotional drama

A mother searches for answers after her daughter (a young Basque politician) disappears under suspicious circumstances. Festival favorite. Quiet, powerful, and packed with real, natural dialogue (not movie-speech).

2. Aprender Español. Here, you'll find grammar exercises, texts, audios—in short, everything you need to progress. For me, the grammar exercises are the absolute best part.

3. Spanish-Games. You can take Spanish courses here, and once you've completed them, you can play games to practice. This is fantastic if you want to learn in a more relaxed way.

4. Languagesonline. This site also offers a complete Spanish course, along with other languages! It's packed with multiple activities.

5. Anki. This is a flashcard app. It's brilliant for keeping all the words you learn in one place and, most importantly, for not forgetting them!

6. Duolingo. I couldn't not mention this application, which has truly changed countless lives when it comes to language learning. I can tell you about my student Lars, who, after trying other methods, found that only Duolingo managed to keep him practicing day after day. Something many people don't know is that Duolingo also offers Duolingo Podcasts. It's a perfect way to keep your Spanish listening comprehension sharp, and they even provide transcripts on the website.

7. Reddit: r/Spanish & r/Language_Exchange. In my opinion, this is the best social network out there because I always find genuine help. People are sincere and regularly offer insights you won't find anywhere else. Here are the specific subreddits for Spanish and for language exchange. Go, ask, and learn!

8. DeepL. This is the best translator, in my opinion. A translator, like a dictionary, is an indispensable tool when learning a language, as you'll sometimes encounter expressions that aren't easily translatable.

9. SpanishDict. This is the dictionary I use most often. It's very practical, useful, and efficient.

10. Dreaming Spanish. Here you'll find another complete Spanish course, but instead of audio, it uses stories and a distinct methodology. You'll learn Spanish much like you acquired your native language: based on context and receiving comprehensible input.

Some people believe that with the explosion of language apps and online resources, a teacher is simply no longer necessary. Even I, as a language student myself, sometimes wonder if I could cut out about 80% of what happens in a typical classroom. Things like a teacher simply presenting vocabulary or guiding me through exercises that I could easily do on my own at home.

However, I have to say, if it weren't for the intensive French classes I took daily for two months with actual teachers, my French would be practically non-existent.

Yes, the tools are out there. But what's missing? Commitment. There's no one else you're accountable to. It's all too easy to say, "I'll do it tomorrow," or "I'll get to it when I have more time."

That's why I believe an irreplaceable role of a teacher is that of a coach. They're someone who guides you on your Spanish learning journey, cheers you on when you're feeling down, and—crucially—someone you have to report to.

Secondly, a good teacher provides the necessary guidance to learn Spanish efficiently, saving you both time and, in the long run, money.

Then, of course, there are the other essential tasks: providing feedback, offering clear grammatical explanations, expanding your vocabulary, and so on.

You're not studying because you lack motivation or talent for languages, but because you haven't yet found the routine, the tools, or the method that clicks with you.

We all love TV shows, telenovelas, and movies.

Why do we love them so much?

Because they harness the power of stories.

That's why my aunt and mother couldn't resist watching the final episode of their favorite telenovela. Or why so many people come into work on Mondays with dark circles under their eyes after a weekend series binge.

Well, an excellent way to improve your Spanish is through stories.

But here's a big problem:

Generally, these stories are made for native speakers.

Faced with this, many people try turning to cartoons, but even cartoons are made for native speakers – just children. And being for children doesn't automatically mean they're easy.

In this situation, what many teachers suggest is to turn on the subtitles.

Subtitles are a great tool for understanding the gist of the story and learning vocabulary.

But, pay close attention here: they don't help you "acquire" the language.

There's a key difference between "acquire" and "learn."

And for that very reason, precisely because of that reason, effort is a scarce commodity.

It's because it's so easy to do something today that almost no one actually does it.

That's why if you do even just a little, you're already doing a lot. We're operating at least at 100x leverage, and that's only increasing.
